Blockchain technology has been used to achieve many things since its creation. But for John McAfee the founder of McAfee Asssociates who is best known for his “unhackable wallet” story, blockchain’s greatest achievement has been the freedom it brought to humanity by creating a “permissionless” society.
McAfee mentioned this during an interview on CoinsBank Blockchain Cruise event. According to him, all workers are “hired slaves” whose employees just enjoy the fruit of their labour in a “subtle and refined slavery” system which blockchain technology has liberated us from.

He described the existing system as a restricted one with legal and regulatory requirements for everything that pertains to our lives. He also stated that centralization limits the attainment of full potentials and makes people fall short of what they could do in a decentralized system.
“We live in a system of permission. Every legislation, every law, every regulatory agency, every regulatory body, is designed to control our thoughts or actions or movements.”
He however said that blockchain technology has brought freedom from centralization and regulation so that people can do what they want without going through a middleman or agency, sighting an example with cryptocurrency transactions.
“If you want to send Bitcoin, Ethereum or Monero, who do I have to ask? Only the peer.” We are creating a permissionless society,” he added.
As far as McAfee is concerned, centralization, regulation and permission is “subtle and refined slavery” system that characterizes the entire world system.
“We are not slaves for our jobs, we are not slaves to the government,…we are slaves to the entire system.” He said.
Anyone who has ever carried out a cryptocurrency transaction would agree with McAfee on this because of the simplicity of the process and how cheap it really is. Besides, blockchain technology is so revolutionary that there is hardly any sector that is not considering the adoption of the technology for one thing or another.
In fact, countries that were against the technology in the past are now exploring ways to use it to improve governance. It is only a matter of time before the worl accepts and embraces it.
However, almost every government in the world is working on regulating the technology because of negative things associated with it such as money laundering, terrorism funding etc.
Will regulation still leave the industry as a “permissionless” system or will it force it into the mold of the system that has made us “hired slaves” for so long?
