The news that John McAfee will run for president for the second time is already causing a stir in the cryptocurrency community. In his announcement, made on Twitter, and in subsequent interviews, McAfee makes clear that cryptocurrency awareness will be a major focus of his campaign. But what does this really mean for the cryptocurrency community, and for cryptocurrency in general?

This is a guest post by Rob Loggia. Rob has been published in the International Business Times UK, Digital Trends and numerous online blogs and platforms. His interests include cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, history, and politics, or rather the destruction of it.

At age 72 and going strong, McAfee fully embraces cryptocurrency, and the underlying blockchain technology, as a driving force in the future of humankind. As a technologist, McAfee understands the neutral, and consequentially dualistic nature of any technology and can be used for evil or good purposes. It can be used to control humanity or it can be used to set people free. And because of what this technology allows us to do could be an empowering technology that fuels our next evolution.

In the wrong hands, the technology could be the final cog in the wheel used to crush humanity into an enduring slavery.

It clear by now which side McAfee is on, and his lifelong exploration and promotion of individual freedom provides hot fuel for his advocacy of cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies. Where some only see investment opportunities, McAfee envisions tools that can: begin to liberate ourselves from the control webs of others; begin ripping out the feed hoses that we have plugged in all over our metaphorical bodies; and begin to demonstrate how we can solve social problems with tools rather than papering over them with legislation and the iron fist.

This last point is significant because it overlaps onto the political arena and the frenzied maelstrom of issue chasing that characterizes it. Indeed, the ostensible purpose of campaigning is for candidates to compete on how they would address these issues and improve society.

The perfect stage upon which to showcase working, successful ideas that address these issues in a fairer and more effective way than legislation ever could. And thanks to the wonders of blockchain technology, McAfee already has a number of real-world examples to draw upon.

Take just two issues that feature heavily in almost every modern election: healthcare and hunger. What happens when people get sick, and why are people still going hungry? In 2020, as in 2016, these issues will account for thousands upon thousands of hours of public discussion, debate, and posturing by candidates and the media.

Affordable Health Care For All was a banner for Bernie Sanders, and the level of support his campaign enjoyed speaks to the importance of this issue for many active voters.

At the heart of the issue, beneath all of the jargon and nonsense, lies the root question: how do we improve access to health care for those who do not have it?

Healthcare is not free, so when we collectively decide to hand it out, what we are really deciding is that someone else will have to pay for it. As there are many people living and voting in our society who do not agree with this ideal. Boil away all the crap, and this is what you’ve got.

Unsung

Unsung is a cryptocurrency fueled distributed technology startup that seeks to address hunger. Rather than ask how we can solve this problem so large and complicated that it is unsolvable, they instead asked how they can demonstrate a way to address it. A working concept that, if scaled by society, would do tremendous good towards a lingering and inexcusable social blight.

Unsurprisingly, they also focus on the efficiency of distribution, and their platform simultaneously reduces waste and gets people fed. Real people that “the system” has failed and who otherwise would not be fed. Powerful.

The cryptosphere is enormous, and mixed in with the scams, failures and stupid ideas are the gems that are, as we speak, accomplishing and succeeding.

By the time 2020 rolls around, McAfee will have plenty of mature, successful blockchain platforms to choose from, assembling a war chest that aligns neatly with the pressing social, and therefore political, problems of our time.  If you thought the attention during the recent Bitcoin mania was big, wait until McAfee 2020.
