NEON raises $10.5M to build Shrapnel: a blockchain-based first-person shooter game

2021-11-16 20:18

NEON, an independent game studio, today announced it has closed a seed funding round of $10.5 million to build Shrapnel, a blockchain-based AAA first-person shooter game. The oversubscribed round was led by Griffin Gaming Partners, Polychain Capital, and Forte (who will also provide technical support).

Importantly, with blockchain and crypto, the game is designed to reward and empower players and creators. Full details of Shrapnel will be announced early next year.

“When we saw the market research that players want to truly own their digital items, we knew there was a unique opportunity in blockchain. Thanks to Griffin’s investment and expertise, along with Polychain and Forte, we can bring to life a game and mod platform that I’ve dreamed of making for years”
– Mark Long, CEO at NEON

Spun-out from HBO Interactive, the NEON team has prior experience in transmedia, virtual production, and gaming-as-a-service. The team is comprised of BAFTA and game industry veterans from leading game companies including Xbox, Electronic Arts, HBO, LucasFilm, Irrational, and Zombie Ent amongst others.

The NEON vision is to create the most immersive gaming experience ever seen in the crypto space…

To support this vision, a range of blockchain and deep tech experts will support the architectural and design needs of the game. More details of Shrapnel plus a trailer are set to be released in early 2022. As the game development progresses, NEON will also be hiring for its Seattle-based team.
