Nvidia Admits Ethereum Mining Limitations Lifted Accidentally

2021-3-17 19:51

Nvidia unintentionally removed the Ethereum mining restrictions on the new graphics card, which is designed mainly for gaming. Nvidia will now design a new graphics card specifically for mining.

Nvidia has reported that it mistakenly removed a hash rate limiter on its RTX 3060 graphics card. The American multinational corporation is renowned for designing graphics and processing units for the gaming and mobile computing market.

They stated last month that the new RTX 3060 graphics card would feature a significant decline in the Ethereum hash rate. The deduction was to be about 50% of the total hash rate for Ethereum mining. It released the graphics card on February 25, 2021.

By limiting the mining performance of the RTX 3060, the company aimed to promote it for gaming only. It also hinted at plans to release a separate one for mining.

In a twist of events, the company revealed that it accidentally lifted the mining restrictions on the RTX 3060. An official of the company told The Verge that an inadvertent inclusion of an internal development code was responsible. As a result, the code removed the hash rate limiter in some configurations. He further said that Nvidia had removed the developer driver, which included the code, but it was too late.

Also, The Verge reported that users could boost hashing rates on their RTX 3060 through the Nvidia 470.05 beta driver.

The hash rate is the computational power required to mine and process transactions on Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains.

Nvidia To Launch Graphics Card for Professional Mining

Nvidia will now design a new graphics card for mining. The Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP) will encompass all the requirements of an efficient mining processor. According to Nvidia, the CMP “allows a fully open, airflow-optimized bracket and is configured to allow a greater number of GPUs to be controlled by one CPU.”

Nvidia’s head of global GeForce marketing, Matt Wuebbling, commented on the disparity between the graphic cards.

“NVIDIA GPUs are programmable, and users are constantly discovering new applications for the. From weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. Mining cryptocurrency is one of them. With CMP, we can help miners build the most efficient data centers while preserving GeForce RTX GPUs for gamers.”

Nvidia adds ray-tracing support to Quake 2 with free upgrade

Now this brings me back. Remember Quake 2? This iconic first-person shooter was released towards the tail-end of the 1990’s, and boasted fast-paced and ultra-violent gameplay. As you’d expect from any ID Software title released during that era, the plot was fairly simple: you’re stranded on an alien planet, and as the sole survivor of an invasion force, you’ve got to murder anything that moves.

Trade War Between China and USA Affects GPU Tariffs, Cryptocurrency Mining to be Affected

President Trump’s latest tariffs on Chinese goods could lead to an increase of graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA in the following months, reported CNBC on September 27, 2018.   In a competitive mining scene where profit margins are slim, even the slightest increase in costs could mean the difference from being in the black and being in the red.
