Ubisoft recently announced it’d be collaborating on a game design course with Concordia University — and now we know the course apparently involves making a For Honor spin-off game that’ll reflect the student’s progress.

The online course is called “Game Creators Odyssey,” which recalls Ubisoft‘s latest Assassin’s Creed game. It’s a two-part course, though only “Act 1” of the course is described in detail online. In this part of the course, students study Rational Game Design, a technique for balancing difficulty and player engagement created by Ubisoft itself. The six-chapter act covers pre-production through different kinds of mechanics. All we know about…

Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac mirrors Microsoft’s aggressive expansion

Sony this week revealed it’d acquired Insomniac Games, its perennial partner studio and the developer of Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank, and the Resistance series. Insomniac joins a conga line of game studios that have been acquired by the console makers in the last few years — indeed, it almost seems like a response to Microsoft’s vacuuming up studios left, right, and center.

Satoshi’s Treasure: The Chase Is on for a $1 Million Bitcoin Prize

A treasure hunt for $1 million worth of bitcoin is officially underway. In a cryptic, rambling message broadcasted to the Blockstream Satellite on April 13, 2019, an anonymous user challenged the rest of the Bitcoin community to a million dollar hunt for what they called “Satoshi’s Treasure,” a contest which will “test the resolve, courage, intelligence, and savvy [sic] of would-be hunters,” the game master claimed.

Battlefield V puts battle royale on the back burner to focus on story

EA is apparently determined to ensure its latest endeavor, WWII-era shooter Battlefield V, is getting as much space as possible to prove it’s different from its eternal rival Call of Duty. The company has now put the brakes on BFV‘s battle royale in favor of the game‘s single-player story, meaning that (for the time being, anyway) it won’t have to compete for the attention of Fortnite emigres with Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode.

Governance, Part 2: Plutocracy Is Still Bad

Coin holder voting, both for governance of technical features, and for more extensive use cases like deciding who runs validator nodes and who receives money from development bounty funds, is unfortunately continuing to be popular, and so it seems worthwhile for me to write another post explaining why I (and Vlad Zamfir and others) do not consider it wise for Ethereum (or really, any base-layer blockchain) to start adopting these kinds of mechanisms in a tightly coupled form in any significant way.
