Cardano (ADA), a proof-of-stake blockchain went live with its Byron reboot in March, meant to pave way for the transition to the Shelley mainnet. The reboot involved a series of updates to major components of the Cardano network, which was reported to have taken 18 months.

In private beta, Cardano has created its first block in the Shelley blockchain, bringing the network closer to launching its Shelley mainnet. This first block is deemed to be a test version of Cardano’s Genesis block, which will be created after the mainnet goes live.

Charles Hoskinson confirmed the report about the first block creation in a Tweet. He explained that the block was created within the ‘friends and family’ stage of Shelley’s indoctrination.

From the Byron reboot, Tim Harrison in a YouTube video explained that the reboot would have three key components: new consensus mechanisms, Daedalus wallet updates, and Adrestia. The reboot would also be rolled out in phases. The production of the first block is the first phase as it was a closed-test rollout. This phase will be closely followed by a hybrid phase, meant to enable users to upgrade from the initial Byron blockchain to the upgrade, Shelley.

Once these two phases have been achieved successfully, the Shelley mainnet will be set. The mainnet allows users to lock their coins on the network, locking them as collateral. Users can receive rewards for locking their coins, while still maintaining the Cardano network. The new consensus mechanisms introduced into the Shelley upgrade are aimed at delivering a high degree of assurance to users.

The Daedalus wallet was equipped to enhance functionality, boost speed, and enable easy verification while improving security. Without the new updates, the previous wallets had a blockchain syncing time of 9-14 hours, while the update syncs at around an hour. The improvement in speed will attract and highly benefit network users. Adrestia, on the other hand, will work in the backend to facilitate easy communication between the network and third-party applications like wallets and exchanges.

The production of the first block is a starting point for Shelley and the Cardano network, providing the users all the updates that the developer team has taken time to create. The future of the Cardano blockchain has been set in motion and the blockchain community is eager to see the achievement of all the phases of the new update and experience Shelley for themselves.
