A new change in Google’s advertising policy could reverse the search giant’s crypto ad ban. Imposed in June this year, the ban has only been in effect for a quarter before being done away with. The new policy change coming this October will allow regulated crypto exchanges to buy ads in Japan and the United States. Facebook has also started a similar filtering policy for advertisements on its platform.

What Was the Ban About?

The sweeping crypto advertisement ban by Google was announced in March but implemented in June. The ban was intended to protect customers from cryptocurrency exposure, especially with regard to wallets, initial coin offerings (ICOs) and trading advice. These facets of cryptocurrencies are still banned.

At the time of the ban, Scott Spencer from Google told CNBC:

“We don’t have a crystal ball to know where the future is going to go with cryptocurrencies, but we’ve seen enough consumer harm or potential for consumer harm that it’s an area that we want to approach with extreme caution.”

The sudden upliftment of the ban may show that Google, just like Facebook, is loosening up to cryptocurrencies. The sector was plagued with several frauds, including ICOs that duped customers in the name of promising technology, several scams, and fraudulent advertising. Not only this, but cryptocurrency exchanges were hacked of millions of dollars as well.

Global Changes in Policy

Though advertisers will only be able to run their ads in the US and Japan, the updated ad policy will be a global phenomenon. Parties that are interested in serving ads will have to apply for certification to show ads in each country individually. Selecting only the US and Japan for where these ads would be shown could mean that Google has some faith in the regulatory framework of these two countries and in the maturity of their markets.

It is important to note that Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, receives over 86 percent of its revenue from advertising. The company earned over $54 billion in ad revenue during the first half of 2018.

Google is following the footsteps of Facebook, which has already started accepting advertisements from preapproved advertisers. The social networking behemoth adopted this policy in June, around the time Google’s ban went into effect.
