First-ever Bitcoin ATM in European Airport Lands in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the first airport in Europe to receive its very own cryptocurrency ATM unit. Dutch software company ByeleX Data Solutions BV fitted Schiphol, one of the world’s biggest airports, with its first cryptocurrency ATM. Travelers can now conveniently convert their leftover euros for two internationally accepted cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Entering the Digital Age

For software companies like ByeleX, airport cryptocurrency ATMs present the perfect opportunity to welcome people from all over the world into the age of digital currency. ByeleX CEO, Herman Vissia, expresses his enthusiasm on the project, saying:

“We are excited that Schiphol is willing to join us in exploring ways to introduce passengers to the new cryptoreality.”

Vissia’s optimistic sentiments were echoed by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol representative Tanja Dik’s statement. “Schiphol is constantly looking for ways to innovate and provide optimum service to passengers,” Dik explains. The airport representative is hopeful that with the Bitcoin ATM, they could “provide a useful service to passengers by allowing them to easily exchange ‘local’ euros for the ‘global’ cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum.”

“That can be beneficial if, for instance, it’s not possible to spend euros in their home country,” Dik added. According to the official Schiphol site, the machine itself is strategically placed in an area where most departing passengers pass through, making it easier for the airport to see if there’s a market for it. The Bitcoin ATM is currently on a six-month trial period as the airport hopes to determine if there’s a demand for this type of service.

An Increasing Presence

Amsterdam’s airport might have gotten its first cryptocurrency ATM only recently, but there already seems to be an increasing number of these machines across Europe. In Prague, there are already ten cryptocurrency ATMs scattered throughout their subway system, according to CNBC.

However, the rapid growth of cryptocurrency-dispensing machines isn’t just limited to the European region as there are already 250 Bitcoin ATMs in Los Angeles alone. There are already 170 cryptocurrency ATMs in Chicago, while over 100 can be found in both Atlanta and New York. Even Canada is embracing these cryptocurrency ATMs, with about 540 in existence.
