Liberland: A Liberal Bitcoin-Friendly Place That Might Soon Be A Nation

Building a nation is rather hard, great wars have been fought, great feats of diplomacy have been conducted and great movements led to forging a nation. One needs to only look into the efforts of the likes of Washington, Bismark or Gandhi. The new century works a little differently. This year, the tiny micro-nation of Liberland might have made a giant stride towards gaining recognition from the European Unions parliament.

Liberland is a seven-kilometer long island on the river Danube between the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Serbia. Based on the notion of Terra nullius, where no other nation lays claim on the land, the President of Liberland, Vit Jedlicka, had claimed a nation built on libertarian ideologies, back in 2015. Since then they have been trying to gain legitimacy, going as far as garnering nearly half a million applications for citizenship. Yet thus far, their knocking on the doors of the EU Parliament has seen little progress towards getting recognized as a sovereign state

Things seem to be more promising recently, on the 31st of January, during the parliaments question time a member of the European Parliament, Bill Etheridge, asked if the Liberland territory was considered to be part of the European Union. In a telling response, that has encouraged many people, Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission (EC), responded by saying that Gornja Siga (Liberlands local name) “still requires further clarification.” Mr. Jedlicaka has hailed this as an important development, noting that clarification on them being part of EU will be a step towards determining them as a sovereign nation.

As is often the case with smaller nations, Liberland is in favor of decentralized economies and favors innovative ideas such as cryptocurrencies. So much so that this is noted on their official website and discusses the possibilities of incorporating systems using crypto-currencies and Decentralised Autonomous Organisations. As a matter of fact, they have been utilizing and accepting digital currencies for years, ever since the nation was proclaimed. The micro-nation has had no issues with adopting and using cryptos with Roger Ver stating that Liberland “has been funded with bitcoin cash more than any other cryptocurrency.”

This sort of clarity will be great for the small state and will add another ally to the ever expanding list of those who see and believe in the future with blockchain.
