Five-time Grammy-nominated artist Akon announced his very own cryptocurrency that is cleverly called “Akoin.” The 45-year-old songwriter also plans on building a futuristic city in West Africa, where he hopes to utilize his own cryptocurrency as the primary means of transaction.

PageSix reported Akon believes that blockchain “could be the savior for Africa” since it brings “power back to the people.”

The Future Is Here

Akon lauded cryptocurrency for its potential and stated it,“Brings the security back into the currency system.” The R&B star further complimented cryptocurrency stating that it:

“allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down.”

Akon was given 2,000 acres of land by the president of his home country of Senegal, and he’s turning this space into a high-tech city, which is being described as a “real-life Wakanda.”

The city is called “Akon Crypto City” and it will be the first-ever “100% crypto-based city” in the world. ICO Impact Group reported this futuristic city is a blend of “Smart City designs with a blank canvas for cryptonizing our daily human and business exchanges.”

What makes this already ambitious project even more so is that it also comes with a goal of “inventing a radical new way of existence.”

Hype Is Growing

Akon’s ambitious venture might be catching people attention, but he’s not the only high-profile celebrity who’s making some buzz in the cryptocurrency scene. CNBC shared that there is a slew of high-profile names who are just as ubiquitous in the entertainment industry as they are in the blockchain scene.

One of these celebrity blockchain promoters is Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx as he’s been promoting cryptocurrency trading on his Twitter page. Another popular endorser is Paris Hilton, who’s been making a name in the cryptocurrency scene since 2016.

Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is also well-known on the blockchain hype train, even going as far as calling himself “Crypto Mayweather” in the process.
