Rapper Eminem References Bitcoin on New Album “Kamikaze”

Cryptocurrency received a pop culture boost this week as rapper Eminem included a Bitcoin reference on a track in his new album, Forbes reports. The new album, “Kamikaze”, was released on August 31.

In the eighth track on the album, titled, “Not Alike”, which features Royce Da 5’9′, Royce shouts, “Remember everybody used to bite Nickel, now everybody doing bitcoin.”

Forbes suggests that the Bitcoin reference is an indicator that “Bitcoin is slowly penetrating different levels of society.”

The line is also a refreshingly positive sentiment towards Bitcoin, which in mainstream society is often considered to have limited use case outside of criminal activity.

“The mention on Eminem’s album is significant however as it suggests not a get rich quick scheme nor a way to sell illicit goods online, but rather something that ‘everybody [is] doing’ — that it’s as common as knowing you bite the metal coin to test its quality,” wrote Forbes.

While unlikely to spur the next bull run, “Not Alike” represents one of the first times cryptocurrency has been referenced in a mainstream rap song. The inescapable allure of high profile wealth along with crypto’s wild west image strikes some of the same chords commonly touched upon in rap culture. No doubt many crypto traders and hip hop enthusiasts alike share the common values of ‘hustling’ and ‘making money’.

Indeed, there have been some notable cases of these two worlds colliding over the last year. In January, rapper Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent, made mainstream headlines when he had claimed to have made millions from owning Bitcoin. 50 Cent has since filed for bankruptcy and admitted to being confused about how much crypto he owned.

In June, rapper and singer Akon, who is credited with twelve Billboard Top Ten Hits, including “Smack That”, announced the launch of his own African “Akon Crypto City” cryptocurrency. The ‘Akoin’ was developed in partnership with Cannes Lions and is part of a larger humanitarian effort to further help the continent. Akon has also expressed interest in running for the US presidency in 2020 and has mentioned that he would like to debate both Donald Trump and rapper Kanye West.

Finally, Yahoo Finance reported earlier this year that the son of Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard is launching his own cryptocurrency this year to help support his future music projects.
