Canadian rapper Drake released his much-anticipated Scorpion album at midnight last night. Although none of the album’s 20 songs mention cryptocurrencies, Big Sean was spotted rapping about cryptocurrency on YG’s ‘Big Bank’, released earlier this week.

The mention was spotted by John Collins, who tweeted the lyrics with a link to rap analysis website Genius.com. CryptoSlate also published an article about Big Sean’s crypto mention earlier this week.

“I might buy her red bottoms with the crypto,” raps Big Sean. “Three coins that’ll pay ya whole semester / but you gotta ride it better than a Tesla.”

The Genius.com analysis, meanwhile, explains the line further.

“You can tell Sean’s been paying attention to the latest tech trends when he floats the idea of using cryptocurrency to buy his girl some Louboutins (red bottoms),”

“At its peak the most popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was worth $20,000 a piece. 3 of those should cover tuition for all but the most expensive schools.”

Even today, with bitcoin prices depressed below $6,000, 3 BTC should pay for at least a semester at a top school in the United States.

Big Sean rapped the lyrics as a featured artist on YG’s Big Bank. Other featured artists on the track included 2 Chainz and Nicki Minaj.

Big Sean, as far as we can tell, has no public connection with bitcoin or cryptocurrencies. He has not publicly mentioned crypto before, and it’s unclear if he’s a hodler, a whale, a bitcoin maximalist, or a Bitcoin Cash supporter.

It’s far from the first time a rapper has mentioned crypto. 50 Cent famously tweeted about bitcoin back in January (that has since been deleted).

“A little bitcoin anyone? LOL. I know I make you sick but excuse me…I’m getting to the bag,” 50 Cent tweeted back in January.

50 Cent is believed to have made over $8 million in bitcoin from album sales of Animal Ambition. The album, launched in 2014, was one of 50 Cent’s worst-selling albums of his carrier. He collected 700 BTC from the album, however, and watched the price of bitcoin skyrocket over the next few years. 50 Cent later deleted the tweet, and he later refuted claims he owned any bitcoin.

50 Cent, who had a net worth of over $100 million at his peak, recently filed for bankruptcy – so he was possibly avoiding tax implications. 50 Cent’s lawyers later claimed that he used a third party service to sell his bitcoin for USD back in 2014.

Meanwhile, Offset of the rap trio Migos has spoken positively about bitcoin in the past. The husband of Cardi B revealed his love for bitcoin in a January 2018 interview with Rolling Stone:

“I want to have a generational money. I got three kids, bro. I need all my kids to be educated and wealthy. I don’t want to be one of those rappers who had it but right now they be on a TV show to keep them going. I would rather be out the scene, getting my money on Bitcoin.”

Even Kanye West has seemingly endorsed crypto. In April 2018, Kanye West tweeted a single word that got the community into a tither:

Drake, meanwhile, spends most of his new album, predictably enough, rapping about Toronto and girls he used to love. He does not mention bitcoin or cryptocurrencies once on Scorpion.
