Xiaomi Launches Mi 10 and and Mi 10 Pro Flagship 5G Phones in China

The fourth-biggest mobile phone producer Chinese Xiaomi launched its new 5G-capable Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro flagship smartphones. This is a try to recuperate its sales that were declining in the home market for a while. However, the company is going pretty well in overseas markets.

Xiaomi showed its Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro at an event in Beijing. Both devices will be available in China before entering international markets. It is interesting that the company did the presentation of its new phones in spite of the coronavirus outbreak which took the lives of more than 1,000 people. The flagships were expected to make their European debut ahead of the big MWC phone show in Barcelona but it was canceled over concerns with the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. That is why Xiaomi did not invite any media to its event in Beijing, but instead, opted to live stream it.

Be it as it may, some of the key specs of the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro include a 6.67-inch full high definition display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor, four-camera set up with one of them being a 108-megapixel sensor developed with Samsung and wireless charging capabilities.

The Mi 10 will be available in China from today and the price is starting at 3,999 yuan ($572.60). Mi 10 Pro is coming four days later with the price starting at 4,999 yuan.

The company is hoping that new phones will satisfy the hunger for 5G that the Chinese users are famous for. Also it hopes to stop the company’s declining shipments in its domestic market.

China started with its 5G networks already last year, before any country. 5G refers to next-generation mobile networks that promise super-fast data speeds. That also means faster downloads of content and potentially better gaming experiences on smartphones.

According to IDC, Xiaomi suffered on the domestic market with shipments of its devices falling more than 21% year-on-year in 2019. However, the company is not the only one since the whole Chinese smartphone market fell by 7.5%. From IDC they said that consumers are “waiting for cheaper 5G smartphones,” so that could be the Xiaomi’s chance for a breakthrough.

IDC adds that it stands strong on a global level. Its worldwide shipments grew 5.5% year-on-year in 2019 despite the overall market decline.

Shou Zi Chew, Xiaomi’s president of international and current chief financial officer, recently confirmed that Europe was now the big focus for the company.

He noted:

“Over the course of the next few years, we’re going to put an emphasis on Western Europe.”

During the last few years, Xiaomi became pretty strong in such countries as Italy or Spain.

At the presentation of new phones, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said:

“Life could be affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus, but we can’t be defeated by the epidemic. With adequate protection, we should resume production, research and development and go back to our normal work as soon as possible. That’s why we decided to have this online launch event. This is a very special event.”

IDC estimates that the fast pace of coronavirus spread could impact the entire smartphone market. IDC says that there could be a 30% year-on-year fall in shipments in the first quarter of 2020.
