Web3 Browser Brave Introduces NFT-Gated Video Calls

Earlier this week on Tuesday, May 23, the Web3 browser Brave announced leveraging non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for introducing the facility of token-gated video calls into its user experience.

The Brave browser will add this new tool to the existing Brave Talk video service and will allow hosts to use NFTs and POAPS in order to manage call access thus providing token-gate access, assigning moderator permissions, configuring avatars, and much more.

Additionally, the Web3 calling will also expand the utility for Brave’s browser-native Brave Wallet. By combining browser, wallet and video, the Brave browser will help in creating the first-ever fully integrated Web3 live event platform.

Brave’s Web3 calls offer enhanced user authentication and authorization features, unlike other video calling platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet that solely rely on passwords for access control. By utilizing NFTs as the gating system, Brave creates a video calling experience that resembles real-life events, where entry is granted based on the possession of a ticket.

The NFT-gated video calls will be available to all Brave Talk users having a premium subscription on any browser along with any Web3 wallet. As of now, this feature is only compatible with Ethereum-based NFTs. “In the future, hosts can grant access based on specific token balances or previous ownership of a token or send crypto to participants,” the company noted.

Token Gating and Brave Talk

Token gating is one of the key developments taking place in Brave Talk which allows hosts to use NFTs and POAPs as access passes to live events. To consider an example, communities can hold members-only calls for token holders. On the other hand, creators can reward a few select fans holding their tokens and offering exclusive access to them. Also, businesses can use the open NFT marketplaces for selling and reselling tickets to the event.

Token Gating is one of the key ways to control access in Web3. It basically comprises two parts: authentication and authorization. For users to get started with the Web3 Brave Talk calls, they need to follow the following steps:

Users can open the Brave browser and navigate to talk.brave.com to begin the process. By selecting the “Host a Web3 Call” option, users can initiate a Web3 room, which requires a Premium Talk subscription to access. Upon creating or joining a Web3 room, users’ wallets will prompt for authentication and grant access to one of their accounts. Users have the option to choose an NFT as their avatar during the call. It is possible to specify whether participants must possess an NFT or be a member of a POAP group in order to enter the call. The link to the call can be shared with desired attendees for them to join the conversation. next
