The global communications company, Viasat, announced that it received an order to produce 1,000 National Security Agency (NSA)-certified Mini Crypto devices. The Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) order has been made by the United States Air Force (USAF).

The technology will have a deep impact in the future of the battlespace environment and military industry. Until now, the technology did not meet the needs of the industry. The devices have been designed in order to be easily embedded on U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) small form factor systems. In this way, they will be able to transmit “Secret and Below Information” on the battlespace.

Some of the systems will include emerging robotics applications, communications devices, and other existing and emerging sensors. These Mini Crypto devices will also allow warfighters to secure small and tactical edge systems in some hostile environments.

The Mini Crypto device will also be providing high levels of security with minimal additional weight and power. Since they are embedded and have a self-contained encryption engine that is able to generate its own keys, it is not necessary to undergo the same handling as other security devices.

Ken Peterman, president, Government Systems, Viasat commented about these Mini Crypto devices:

“Cyber threats have created a new operational environment and have increased risk across the multi-domain battlespace. Our Mini Crypto will provide substantial operational cost savings to our customers through certificate-based Tactical Key Management and non-Controlled Cryptographic Item handling.”

At the same time, these Mini Crypto devices will also bring an enhanced ease-of-use to warfighters with innovations in low Size Weight andPower. This means that there will be longer operational periods and smaller payloads.

The new LRIP order of Mini Crypto devices from Viasat shows that there is a transition point for the embeddable security technology. The devices will be based on the company’s technology known as PSIAM, which provides accredited cryptography for a wide range of apps.
