TikTok Rival from Vine Creator Called Byte Successfully Debuts on App Store and Google Play

Byte, a 6-seconds video-sharing app created by the co-founder of Vine, Dom Hofmann, has been launched on Apple‘s App Store and Google Play. Interestingly, Byte is now among the most downloaded apps in both stores despite the flaws it has. As such, the app could potentially meet its aim to rival ByteDance‘sTikTok, a video sharing platform valued at $75 billion.

Byte Launches on Apple and Google Stores

On January 24, 2020, Byte was launched on Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Reportedly, the new application now ranks as one of the most downloaded free iPhone app on Apple’s U.S. App Store. On Friday, it was in the first position.

Byte is also among the top 10 free iOS app in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway. And on Google‘s Play store, it is ranked sixth on the free app spot in the U.S.

This social media platform can be compared with Tiktok, Instagram, and Snapchat, however, it plans to incorporate a program to enable influencers to earn.

Dom Hofmann, the app’s creator said Byte is intended to be a great successor to the Vine app, a social sharing platform. The latter was purchased by Twitter Inc. in 2012 before it was closed down in early 2017 due to low profit.

There is also a belief that the video-sharing app will rival the $75 billion entity Tiktok.

dear friends,

today we’re bringing back 6-second looping videos and a new community for people who love them.

it’s called byte and it’s both familiar and new. we hope it’ll resonate with people who feel something’s been missing. https://t.co/g5qOIdM8qG

Limitations of Byte

Nonetheless, Byte has several flaws including the inability of users to share links to videos uploaded. Instead, members are prompted to use a share button to export the page, that does not link back to the app.

Another limitation of Byte is the fact that the links to user profiles are not provided. Hence, a user cannot simply share their profile URL on other social media. In line with that, members cannot see other user’s followers count, which has led to some users overhyping the number of followers they have all in a bid to get a wider audience.

Furthermore, there have also been reports of app crashes when a user wants to upload lengthy videos. Accordingly, these setbacks could potentially limit the exposure of Byte given that one of its objectives, is to build an audience to rival TikTok.

Despite these flaws, the app could potentially rival TitTok given the number of downloads it has garnered just in the first days after the launch.

So, we can say that now TikTok is under a threat of serious competition. As Coinspeaker informed on January 13, 2020, Instagram’s Boomerang has been revamped with new features to compete with TikTok.
