A pair of computer scientists from Georgia Tech developed a machine learning-based method to automate the generation of novel video games. It’s the first of its kind and could lead to the democratization of game creation.

Making a video game is hard work. Today’s modern AAA titles are developed by teams of dozens or even hundreds of expert computer programmers. Most of those teams use AI and machine-learning algorithms to ease development burdens – especially in popular engines like Unity – but until now there hasn’t been a way to automate the creation of an entirely original game. Designers, don’t be afraid to let robots design

In 1961, Alan Perlis, an early pioneer in computer science, advocated that computer programming should be a requirement of a liberal arts education. He believed students of creative disciplines should learn programming, not so they could become programmers, but so they could learn more about how to construct and analyze processes — whether building an imaginary world for a video game, designing a brand logo, or telling a compelling story.
