The Tezos Foundation (XTZ/USD) has invested $1.23 million in a fund to collect non-fungible tokens (NFTs) created by African and Asian artists, Invezz learned from a press release. Photographer Misan Harriman was chosen to curate the permanent art collection.

Tezos Foundation, a Swiss NPO, will use the funds to support pioneering artists from Africa and Asia. Harriman is not only a renowned photographer, but also an expert in making and collecting NFTs. In addition, he chairs Southbank Centre, London’s complex of artistic venues.

Harriman intends to place an emphasis on acquiring the works of artists from regions that are underrepresented in the NFT community, like Asia and Africa. He commented:

As the first curator of this collection, I want to make sure the world sees the diverse voices that are making truly extraordinary work[s] with art. The Tezos Foundation Permanent Collection will support and celebrate a new generation of artists that have chosen a smart contract-enabled path to be their true selves.

Blockchain technology supporters believe NFTs have the power to break down barriers in the art world while critics of NFTs express concerns over their volatility and that of cryptocurrencies in general.

Hurdles remain, but they cannot halt the advent of the industry according to Tezos Foundation, an arm of the Tezos ecosystem and blockchain. Tezos cofounder and early architect Arthur Breitman talked about how the collection drew attention to up-and-coming Web3 artists. He said:

This project, in collaboration with Misan Harriman’s talent and expertise, allows us to create a bespoke destination with the sole purpose of elevating digital artists who turn to Tezos for a sustainable way of sharing their work with the world.
