NEO founders Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang answered their community’s questions yesterday in a Reddit AMA. The Q&A session focused largely on the perceived lack of communication between NEO and its western audiences, its lack of marketing efforts, and the need for transparency between developers and users.

NEO is a China-based Ethereum competitor. Like Ethereum, it allows for digital assets and tokens, as well as smart contracts, to be built on top of its blockchain. NEO was rebranded from Antshares in June 2017 as it rose through the ranks to become a top cryptocurrency.

In all, the AMA session reflected both the community’s devotion and its concern. Although NEO is now popular with Western investors, the community questioned whether that is sustainable:

“It’s been 7 months of bear market for all crypto, but NEO ‘s performance has been one of the worst in the top 20, losing 86% since [its all time high] (even losing its spot in the top 10). Are you going to implement any marketing/advertising strategy to fight this dramatic price dump? (NEO’s marketing/advertising department definitely needs huge improvements.)”

And it is not just NEO’s marketing that users took issue with. During the AMA, there was much discussion around the “fear, uncertainty, and doubt” among the crypto community and media. Recently, rumors that Da Hongfei and NEO developers left to work on the Ontology blockchain have been circulating:

“If someone said that Vitalik left ETH, people would laugh in their face and instantly show proof that it’s a lie…But this cannot be done with NEO…What will [NEO] do to stop these rumors from being even remotely plausible?”

In response, Da Hongfei confirmed that neither he nor developers had left for Ontology and said that NEO is hiring for marketing positions. He did not acknowledge any plans to change NEO’s online presence.

Another issue was the “crisis of communication” between NEO’s user base and developers. Currently, NEO uses Discord, a chat app on which “the same points are endlessly repeated.” One Redditor proposed the creation of a forum to make development decisions transparent and to make topics better organized. Da Hongfei endorsed it: “I like this idea.” Another user proposed a wiki to serve as a knowledge base.

Redditors also asked about the legal and political status of NEO in its home country, as China has banned crypto and embraced blockchain tech. NEO was mostly silent on the topic of its relationship with China’s laws and said little on the country’s choice to use Ethereum over NEO for government purposes.

Many other issues were also discussed, including fee redistribution, spam transactions, and the possibility of splittable NEO tokens. Technical changes are coming with NEO 3.0, which will be launched in two years. Erik Zhang encouraged Reddit posters to view the milestone on Github and has hinted that a whitepaper will be published “after a thorough discussion.”
