Privacy in Trezor Suite: Introducing the Tor Switch

2020-11-12 18:21

A hotfix was released on 12 Nov 2020. The latest version is 20.11.2.

One of the most respected privacy projects of our time, Tor, is now part of Trezor Suite. At the flick of a switch, you can benefit from an anonymized global network that will obscure your connection by relaying it through servers distributed around the world.

Start using Tor with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies by upgrading to the latest public beta version of Trezor Suite, now available to download from the Trezor Suite landing page or directly from the desktop app. You can find a list of changes when you start the app or in the Trezor Suite Github release notes. If you only use the Trezor Suite web app, you do not need to do anything to start using the new features. The Tor switch is only available in the desktop app.

Tor is the perfect match for users who are concerned about sharing identifying data with a third-party service or anyone who might be observing their communications. Using this feature is easy, just turn it on and it will quickly and effectively bring greater anonymity and peace of mind by masking your network activity.

What is Tor?

Tor is an open-source network that is used by journalists, security specialists, governments, and individuals around the world. It is made up of thousands of servers run by volunteers, and uses a special protocol that encrypts your data at multiple levels. Each new relay that your connection is routed through will decrypt one layer of encryption, enough to know where to pass the message to next. The final recipient will receive your data unencrypted, and they will receive it without knowing the IP address it was originally sent from.

One of the best things about Tor is that it can be used for many different applications, by anyone from ordinary people to high-profile individuals, journalists, law enforcement or global corporations.

How do I use Tor in Trezor Suite?

We have made it as easy as possible to use Tor with Trezor Suite. Simply use the Tor Switch, located in the top-right of your Suite window, to toggle Tor on or off. If you see the switch is on, you can be sure that your data is being encrypted and your IP address is masked.

Due to the longer route taken for your connection to reach its destination, as well as the time taken for encryption and decryption along the way, using Tor may not be as fast as an unencrypted, unmasked connection. Also note that, when Tor is enabled, any offers shown through the Buy tab will show offers for the country where the Tor exit relay you are using is based. To complete a purchase, you may need to manually set the exit relay to one located in your own country.

Can I trust that Tor will not share my data with a third party?

The security behind Tor is robust but there are ways it can be compromised. The Tor foundation does not control the routing nodes so it does not have the ability to listen in on your communications. One vulnerability arises from an attacker owning both the entry and exit points that a message is routed through, but the probability of this happening is less than one in two million.

For greater assurance, it should be noted that whistleblowers such as Julian Assange and Edward Snowden have been reported to use Tor to evade espionage from the US government. You can read more about the way Tor is helping protect human rights and individual freedoms on the Tor website.

Is Tor legal?

Yes, Tor is completely legal in most parts of the world. It has been sponsored by many organisations including government departments like the National Science Foundation and companies such as Google.

How can I support the Tor foundation?

The best way to support Tor is to become an advocate of the project or to donate. Donations of cryptocurrency are also accepted. Trezor will be working closely with the Tor foundation going forward, so expect some news about that in a later blog!
