The town of Plattsburgh, New York, has adopted a law in which crypto mining operations will have to hold a special permit in order to operate in the town.

There have been several discussion on whether it is necessary or not to impose certain restrictions on mining activities. And citizens in Plattsburgh New York were not the exception.

Back in March, city officials decided to impose a new ban on cryptocurrency miners that started operating in the region. Citizens complained that they were paying higher electricity bills. At the same time, New York’s Public Service Commission allowed municipal authorities to impose different electricity rates to entrepreneurs operating with crypto mining activities.

Crypto mining companies operating in the region will need to have a Special Use Permit if they want to start their mining investments. In order for this law to come into effect, it will have to be filed at the New York Secretary of State’s office.

Cryptocurrency miners and other enthusiasts decided to go to upstate New York in order to enjoy lower electricity prices due to its proximity to the St. Lawrence River. Although mining activities could provide huge benefits to these communities, problems arose once they realized the consumption rate related to these activities.

The New York Times, for example, reported that Mayor Read informed that there were several individuals complaining about higher electricity prices. Additionally, Mold-Rite Plastics’ CFO said that electricity rates in January and February were $60,000 dollars higher than usual.

Another complaint related to cryptocurrency mining activities is to the noise produced by the operations. Cooling systems are very noisy, and in general, when operating together, they produce an extreme noise. The local law says that mining operations should not exceed ‘90 decibels at a distance of 25 feet from the structure.’

A similar decision was taken in Ephrata, a small Washington town. There, cryptocurrency miners have also been banned for a year. The ban will initially affect new companies and players rather than the old ones already operating in the region.
