One Click, Millions in BTC and USDT Gone: The Crypto Scam You Need to Know About

2025-8-22 23:00

CaptainAltcoin’s YouTube channel has released another important video, this time digging into one of the slickest scams in crypto today. In the video, we show how a single click cost a trader over a million dollars in wrapped Bitcoin – and why protecting your wallet has never been more important.

In crypto, your wallet is your lifeline. Lose control of it, and your money is gone forever. Unlike banks, there are no chargebacks, no fraud departments, no second chances. That’s why it’s crucial to understand how these scams work and how to avoid them.

The Scam in Action

The story starts with a site that looks perfect – a fake staking dApp that mirrors the real thing. The victim connects their wallet and clicks “Approve.” Hidden in that approval is unlimited spending permission for the attacker.

Nothing happens right away. Weeks go by as the victim’s balance grows. Then, in a single transaction, the scammer sweeps the wallet clean. Fifteen wBTC – worth about one million dollars – gone in seconds. No private keys leaked. Just one bad approval.

This is not a one-off. Just some days ago, another trader lost $3.05 million in USDT the same way. A few days earlier, someone else lost $908,000 in USDC, 458 days after signing an approval. The scam playbook is identical – only the tokens change.

According to CertiK, these phishing approvals have become one of the biggest drivers of crypto losses. In the first half of 2025 alone, over $2.47 billion has been stolen this way. That’s already more than the total for all of 2024.

How to Protect Yourself

The good news is that you can defend against this with simple steps:

Revoke approvals you don’t trust. Use tools like Revoke.cash once a month to clean up old permissions. Use smart wallets with limits. ERC-4337 wallets can auto-expire approvals after 24 hours. Never sign blind. If you don’t know what you’re approving, don’t click. No APY or staking reward is worth losing everything.

These steps may sound basic, but they can save your portfolio.

Crypto promised freedom, but with freedom comes responsibility. Scammers rely on speed, trust, and shortcuts. If you take the time to protect your wallet, you take away their power.

In case you haven’t heard about it yet, FaceTime, the audio and video conferencing app that comes preinstalled on all iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers, had a major security flaw that could let a caller hear the audio from the device they were calling before the person on the other end accepted or rejected the call.
