American professional baseball team Oakland Athletics, commonly known as the A’s, has made a debut in crypto. A’s president Dave Kaval unveiled this news during an interview, noting that the team is selling a six-seat suite for this year’s 81-game home season at the Oakland Coliseum for 1 Bitcoin (BTC). However, fans that seek to buy the suite in fiats would have to part with $64,500.

In the interview, Kaval disclosed that a single game’s six-seat box for select April contests would cost $594, inclusive of all accouterments. To this end, the president said that the team’s fans are getting a Bitcoin discount at the moment, but it is subject to change in the future. Reportedly, the Bitcoin offer is only viable until April 1, seeing as it is the scheduled date that the A’s open the season by playing against the Houston Astros. Explaining why the team had suddenly decided to embrace the crypto sector, Kaval said,

Since a bitcoin is worth about the same as a season suite it gives our fans some different choices. And it kind of tests it to see if it’s something we’d like to do in more aspects of our business.

He added that the Bay Area has seen an increase in the number of people that are either interested or are already transacting in BTC. As a result, the team is trying to remain innovative by offering fans versatile payment options.

A chance for the team to make 100 BTC

Purportedly, the A’s have 100 six-seat suites to sell this season. The team is also looking to sell individual game tickets, seeing as California’s governor, Gavin Newsom recently allowed the state’s Major League teams to open the season at 20% capacity in their respective ballparks.

The Oakland Coliseum has a 45,000 capacity. As such, the 20% allowance would see the team sell 9,000 tickets per game. However, this figure might change in the future, depending on the rate of COVID-19 vaccinations and the spread of the disease.

Staying optimistic, Kaval said, while there is a lot of uncertainty, regarding the number of fans that will be allowed to attend games this season, the team is trying to remain flexible. He went on to point out that the A’s initially thought they would not have any fans on opening day. As such, having the coliseum 20% full is a big deal.
