Democrat Eric Adams has won the New York City mayoral race after promising to make the city the centre of Bitcoins. The mayor-elect revealed this news through a tweet on November 3, celebrating his victory over Republican Curtis Sliwa and eight other candidates. Reportedly, Adams garnered 72.8% of the votes and will take office on January 1, 2022.

It's official — our five-borough, knock-every-door, reach-every-voter campaign was successful: We have won the race for Mayor of New York City!

This is my dream come true, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent the City that we all love as your Mayor-elect 🗽🍎

In a subsequent interview, Adams vowed to enter into a friendly competition with Miami’s mayor, Francis Suarez, who has been pushing the city to adopt cryptocurrencies. Adams said Suarez’s efforts saw Miami create MiamiCoin, the first CityCoin cryptocurrency, which is doing very well.

As part of competing with Suarez, Adams said he and the city authorities would explore the creation of a CityCoin for New York. He also promised to look into what is preventing the growth of Bitcoin (BTC/USD) and digital asset assets in the city.

Stiff competition is in order

The mayor-elect added that NYC must build a pipeline of talent for crypto-related jobs. Adams added that he seeks to introduce balance so that the city isn’t one-sided, with specific groups and sectors outperforming others.

While NYC lags regarding crypto adoption, it is worth noting that Adams helped the number of tech startups in Brooklyn increase by 365% during his tenure as borough president. He intends to use the same approach that fostered tech growth in Brooklyn to make NYC a crypto hub.

Meanwhile, Miami is also pushing to become a crypto and tech hub, with Suarez recently tweeting that he would like to get his next paycheck in BTC.

I’m going to take my next paycheck 100% in bitcoin…problem solved! @Sarasti can you help? https://t.co/v4YdPZ0tYc

His post comes after trying to convince the city’s commission to embrace Bitcoin for paying taxes and paying the salaries of city employees.

Notably, Miami and NYC are not the only cities with mayors that want to make them crypto centres. Jason Stewart, the mayor of Cool Valley, recently disclosed plans to launch an initiative that would offer approximately $1 million worth of BTC to the city’s residents.
