In a recent blog post, blockchain project NEO described its experiences at the recent hackathon event in Georgia. The event was organized by NEO’s Black Sea Community and the government of Georgia. The event witnessed 13 teams participating in the hackathon, many of whom submitting complete projects from idea to implementation.

Georgia’s Interest in NEO

In the blog post, NEO highlighted how the government of Georgia is showing keen interest in blockchain technology and, especially, in the NEO ecosystem. The hackathon, held between September 28 and September 30, was organized to explore blockchain opportunities and their applications in the public sector.

NEO explained the objective of the hackathon as follows:

“The event was designed to tap into community talents and use blockchain technology to boost local economic development, lift the poverty line, and improve government work efficiency.”

Thirteen teams participated in the competition, of which seven submitted eligible projects on the last day of the hackathon. The finalists included students from local universities, as well as blockchain developers from neighboring states. The members of the judging panel were Elene Grigolia, representative of the National Agency of Public Registry Georgia; NGD developer Tom Zhang; Effect.AI CEO Chris Dave; and two members of the Bulgarian NEO development community, Yasen Mihailov, and Zdravko Georgiev.

The submissions were judged on four grounds — idea, completion, applicability, and originality — with 10 as the maximum score for each.

The Winners of the NEO Hackathon

The first prize was collected by GeoToken (GEO), a program designed to help in the promotion of local tourism using blockchain technology. It can be used to find local attractions and can help facilitate currency exchange. It enables quick payment via QR code scanning and is based on the NEP-5 smart contract. Tourists who leave reviews on local attractions will be awarded credits. The implementation of the app may need government-level systematic reformation, and its credit system could have some commercial uses.

People’s Voice came at second place. The blockchain-based voting system is a decentralized application that uses public and private key encryption to maintain the authenticity of votes. It also aims to encourage participation in referendums and polls. The project was recognized for its high applicability, and it scored well on completeness of design and coding. The system also boasts of easy implementation.

The third place was secured by Golden Fleece CEO Vakhtang Gogokhia, who used the NEO blockchain for diploma record keeping. The system records student data on a blockchain and creates a QR code and a query system to access specific data.
