Known for her critical stance on cryptocurrencies, former Federal Reserve Chairperson Janet Yellen was gifted Bitcoin by Raz Suprovici, founder of bitcoin gifting service, Biterica.

Ms. Yellen has openly spoken against cryptocurrencies before. Her stance has been stiff and tough towards cryptocurrencies, but she has also reflected her views on the importance of Blockchain technology. Only last Monday, when she was present at the Canada Fintech Forum, she not only criticized cryptocurrencies, but also explained why she believed digital monies are not practical.

The very next day, Raz Suprovici from Biterica sent Yellen USD 20 in bitcoin (roughly 0.0031642) through her University of California Berkeley email. Yellen, in response to inquiries about the gifted bitcoin, she informed she was aware of the transfer but she had not looked much into it.

“I did receive a gift of bitcoins this morning and have been very busy ever since so I've not looked into it further.”

Suprovici said his action was in response to Yellen’s remarks on cryptocurrency. Instead of criticizing her, he saw gifting her bitcoin would be the most appropriate method of letting Yellen learn more about cryptocurrencies and see the benefits they offer.

“Based on the way she spoke about it at the conference, it seemed that she had never owned any bitcoin” Mr. Suprovici talked about Yellen’s attitude towards digital currencies.

He further said, “People are afraid of the unknown. I was hoping that when she logged into her bitcoin wallet with her ID and password, she would see it's just like a typical online bank account. The money she owns is there, in her control, ready to spend … I hope that this sparks her openness to the technology”

He was further of the opinion, “Maybe all policy-makers should be gifted a little bit of bitcoin”
