Mainframe (MFT) announced in a blog post yesterday that they have donated 1000 ETH, worth about $530,000 at time of writing, to the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting journalists and whistleblowers from censorship.

According to Mainframe’s founder, Mick Hagen, the decision to donate to FPF “stems from the mutual goal to fight not only for a free press, but for a free people in a digital age: free from the chains of censorship, free from the tyranny of unchecked surveillance, and free to use our data how we want.”

This is the first public donation to come from Mainframe’s “Proof of Heart” campaign—a fundraising effort to raise money for “a few non-profits which align with [Mainframe’s] values of privacy and freedom.” The donation is also a first from the perspective of the FPF, as it is the first major cryptocurrency donation that the organization has ever received.

The Proof of Heart campaign, which ended on May 24, raised over $1.4 million in less than 3 weeks. Although all of the funds raised will be donated to charity, contributors to the campaign were not acting purely out of altruism. Instead, would-be donors were incentivized to contribute with the promise that the top donors would be rewarded with free MFT tokens.

The campaign was meant to channel some of the “greed and speculation” that is prevalent in the cryptocurrency industry and “direct it towards worthwhile causes,” Hagen said.

Mainframe has not yet announced the recipients of the remaining $900,000 raised during the campaign, but it will likely go to similar organizations fighting to end censorship, mass surveillance and other security concerns in the digital world.
