Kobe Bryant Legacy Website Launches Charitable NFTs

2021-9-21 04:51

KB24, the sport star’s former website, launches Kobe-inspired art collectibles as NFTs for a charitable cause.

The new owners of KB24 announced a 10-step roadmap for the digital NFT project in honor of the basketball star. Within 48 hours of the announcement, the website received over 7,000 reservations for the auction. There will be 10,000 non-fungible tokens which showcase great moments and achievements from Bryant’s career.

Included in the roadmap is an NFT airdrop to early access fans and adopters, an art reveal, and various giveaways.

Initially the website launched in 2006 as the personal website of Kobe as a way for fans to connect with the star. However by 2016 and his retirement from the NBA the website changed hands multiple times. Now it’s in control of the KB24 project, which formed from two lifelong Kobe fans  Andy Treys and Sako Waves.

“We grew up on the site. We wanted to keep it forever, just like a signed Kobe jersey or basketball, but in this case there is only one KB24.com.”

The two expanded their team in order to operate the mega NFT sale.

“We have so many people on board helping us bring the KB24 NFT project to fruition, and everyone is happy donating their time and resources without asking for anything in return. It really shows how much impact Kobe Bryant had on everyone’s lives,” explains Andy, “We’re excited to share more information on everyone else helping with the project as we get closer to launching.”

According to the founders they created the project with charity in mind. Therefore 100% of the proceeds and revenue gained from the OpenSeas auction will go towards the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation. The auction could potentially generate $50 million for the charity.

NFTs and the Sports World

Prior to this KB24 NFT auction news, other Kobe NFTs hit the market. The Cryptograph NFT market auctioned off unreleased Kobe Bryant photos. Proceeds from this auction also went towards the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.

In addition, big names in the sports industry seek out ways for crypto involvement. EA Sports released an ad for a Senior Director to look into “blockchain and NFTs”.

Marketplaces such as Dibbs, capitalize on the inherent collectible nature of the sports world with an NFT sports card marketplace. As the sports world continues its embrace of crypto, there will be not telling which major star is next on the NFT scene.
