Smart Energy Ecosystem in the Works, Thanks to Collaboration Between IOTA and ENGIE

Distributed ledger technology (DLT) has been around for a few years now, but the technological innovations that is responsible for have been major. One of the recent ways that they are taking on another industry is with energy and how their ecosystems can support entire cities. In an effort to capitalize on and further this new use case, both the IOTA Foundation and ENGIE Lab Crigen have decided to work together. In their alliance, they will be working on smart energy ecosystems, which will be built upon the blockchain.

This partnership comes with some terms. ENGIE is responsible for using their Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab to play with the functions of IOTA Tangle. IOTA Tangle is a protocol that involves an open source blockchain, promoting IoT transactions and secure data transfer, among other benefits. As the team learns more through experimentation, ENGIE should be able to come up with join proofs-of-concept, which will ultimately help with the businesses processes that related to energy.

During the post, CSAID Lab Research Manager Philippe Calvez commented:

“Many works and proofs-of-concept have already been realized in the lab and we would like to participate in larger projects in France and abroad, in order to concretize and extend the use of innovative DLT technologies like that offered by IOTA in different business activities of ENGIE.”

ENGIE Group itself is a provider of energy involving natural gas and electricity, but ENGIE Lab Crigen is the department that deals with research and development. Within the lab, the company looks for alternative energy solutions, employing the innovations that have already been discovered in sensors, nanotechnologies, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Adding to Calvez’s comments, Wilfried Pimenta de Miranda, the head of Business Development at the IOTA Foundation, said:

“The IOTA Foundation is excited to team up with ENGIE Lab to further accelerate the technology development and prototyping cycle through concrete pilots and international collaboration within the power and utilities industry. The IOTA team very much looks forward to scaling this cooperation. ENGIE Lab’s broad expertise and proactiveness in investigating new digital technologies and smart energy business models are real assets to our ecosystem.”

Along with the recent connection to ENGIE, IOTA has been working to integrate blockchain in other ways. They have partnered with Volkswagen for transferring data regarding vehicle performance, which is planned for launch next year under the name “Digital CarPass.”
