The IOTA Foundation has been going strong on hiring in November. After adding some dynamic individuals, including two of their longstanding community members, into a myriad of roles, the Foundation recently announced that they had hired mathematician William Sanders and physicist Andreas Penzkofer to the team.

After completing his undergraduate studies at The University of Nebraska, Sanders received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He is an academic in the realm of pure mathematics. He was a postdoc at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, where he decided to stay after completion.

His research was primarily directed on commutative algebra and category theory. Commutative algebra is connected to geometry, where the defining polynomials can be used to study geometric objects. Objects and morphisms are some of the subjects covered in category theory, which is an abstract study of structure.

During his research, Sanders has used category theory to apply geometric and algebraic tools to several mathematical problems. He also has several peer-reviewed journals to his credit, along with years of academic work.

On joining IOTA, Sanders said that he loves exploration and mathematics research and that he is:

“Excited to work on the fascinating problems facing the IOTA Foundation. Besides the intellectual challenges ahead, I look forward to studying questions with great societal benefits. I believe that my journey from pure to applied math should be an exciting one.”

A physicist and electrical engineer, Penzkofer specializes in analytical and numerical methods. He completed his graduation from the University of Regensburg in Germany. He also completed a thesis on particle physics, working as a part of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre research group in the US. He held a Ph.D. and completed post-doctoral research in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sheffield, UK. He has worked extensively on creating models for complex electrical machines used in large-scale wind turbines.

His work spans from academics to the renewable energy industry. IOTA hired him for his numerical and analytical abilities which could be helpful in improving Tangle’s immunity to attacks. He said that he was drawn to IOTA for two primary reasons:

“Firstly, I believe its unique approach can overcome key challenges facing blockchain technologies, such as scalability or the rapidly increasing energy demand of blockchain PoW. Secondly, I am fascinated by the beautiful complexity of the Tangle and excited to be working on solving the mathematical challenges that arise during its evolution.”
