IBM Files Patent For Blockchain Database Management System

IBM, a giant of the tech industry, has filed a new patent. This one is for certain aspects of the blockchain technology and it is called “Managing a Database Management System Using a Blockchain Database”.

The central idea that IBM had is to build a reliable database tampering detection system. This system would be used in the detection of any inconsistencies stored in a central database on the blockchain. According to the patent, some of the aspects treated in the system are the method of making the DBMS (database management system).

One of the main ideas is to use the blockchain technology to link the central database with the DBMS and use it to verify it. In order to access this system, you would have to request access to the DBMS first instead of accessing it directly. Because of this, both the blockchain database and the central one would be maintained as the same.

IBM initially filed this patent on December 22, 2017. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), this, together with the other six patents related to the blockchain technology that IBM has managed to receive in 2018, signalizes that the company is having a heavy interest in this technology recently.

This patent is actually very predictable, as the blockchain might be a very good way to protect sensitive data from tampering because of its decentralized ledger. At the moment, IBM already offers IBM D2, a solution that comprises database management with operational database features, data warehouse, data lake and fast data. However, using the blockchain could help IBM to make an even better product.

In the recent past, IBM has recognized the blockchain as a possible way of fostering a new generation of transactional apps that will greatly improve transparency and accountability. IBM also already has its own blockchain, Hyperledger, which has many tools like Cello, Explorer, Composer and Caliper.

This is just another chapter of the changes that are happening on the market right now. As IBM and other giants of the market start to privatize the public ledger technology, a new big battle has begun to discover which company will dominate this new space.
