Poste Italiane, the Italian postal service provider recently released a statement saying that they are going to join Hyperledger blockchain.

#PosteItaliane takes part in the establishment of an interoperable, transparent, cross-industry, distributed ecosystem joining the @Hyperledger Community, an #opensource collaborative effort with more than 260 companies that contribute to advance #blockchain based technologies.

Led by CEO Matteo Del Fante, Poste Italiane SpA provides post and logistics, and financial and insurance services in Italy. Its Mail, Parcels and Distribution segment provides letter post, express delivery, logistics, parcels, and philately services.

The company’s Payments, Mobile and Digital segment offer payment and collection services, e-money products, and telecommunications services to retail, business, and public administration customers. Its Financial Services segment engages in the collection of various forms of savings deposits from the public; provision of payment and foreign currency exchange services, as well as investment services.

The official announcement read:

“Membership of Hyperledger is in keeping with the strategic guidelines set out in the Strategic Plan, Deliver 2022. These aim to reinforce Poste Italiane’s digital leadership, accelerating the process of acquiring new capabilities and experimenting with the use of blockchain and DLTs in order to better understand their potential as drivers of business innovation.”

They added that we are living in a period where digital evolution is rapidly enabling new services, data security is of growing importance. They added:

“Blockchain has the potential to offer an effective response to the issues of security, transparency, interoperability, and privacy, and Poste Italiane is committed to making it readily accessible in order to benefit the Italian economy.”

Hyperledger is an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. It is a global collaboration, hosted by The Linux Foundation, including leaders in finance, banking, Internet of Things, supply chains, manufacturing, and Technology.

It is an OS for marketplaces, data-sharing networks, micro-currencies, and decentralized digital communities. It has the potential to vastly reduce the cost and complexity of getting things done in the real world. It is communities of software developers building blockchain frameworks and platforms on an Open Source network.

Poste Italiane is the second major company to get onboard on the Hyperledger Ecosystem. Earlier this week Agricultural conglomerate Cargill and one of the biggest American companies announced that they are going to be investing in digital engineering resource through developing Hyperledger’s platform.
