Valve Corporation has removed a game from its video game marketplace Steam that allegedly hijacked users’ computers to mine cryptocurrency, Motherboard reported July 30.
The Steam game store has delisted Abstractism, an indie game accused of deceptive practices and cryptojacking, and has banned its developer from the platform.
Steam took action following complaints from a number of users saying that the game setup file seemed to include a Trojan virus and malware disguised as steam.exe processes and launcher.
Game developer Okalo Union and publisher dead.team released Abstractism on Steam on March 15.
However, in December last year Steam stopped acceptance of BTC payments due to high fees and volatility.

No, positive reviews didn’t ‘trick’ Steam into thinking a game was fake

A small indie game on Steam was on probation for several months after its release, only yesterday being granted access to the platform’s full features. While the exact reason for the problem appears to be a small bug, the developers seemed to think, at least for a bit, that the game’s huge amount of positive reviews had fooled Steam into thinking the game was a phony.

Steam removes controversial game accused of mining cryptocurrency

Steam has removed “trivial platformer” game Abstractism from its store following accusations that the game is surreptitiously stealing users’ computing power to mine cryptocurrency. “We have removed Abstractism and banned its developer from Steam for shipping unauthorized code, trolling with content, and scamming customers with deceptive in-game items,” Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Steam, told Hard Fork in an email.

Steam Game ‘Abstractism’ Contains Crypto-Mining Malware

An independent game that has been available on digital distribution platform Steam since March reportedly contains a crypto miner. Steam’s developer, Valve, has not made any public statements on the matter, although it has removed the game, ‘Abstractism’, from the Steam store; links to the game’s page instead redirect to Steam’s home page.
