Following PayPal Ban, Far Right Reporter Tommy Robinson Looks To Bitcoin

Controversial far-right reporter and activist Tommy Robinson was recently banned by PayPal for not following user guidelines. He was the former leader of the unpopular English Defense League.

The company’s acceptable use policy forbids “the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that are discriminatory.” It took the company a petition of 65,000 signatures before it took any actions.

To the PayPal ban, Robinson responded on Facebook saying:

“Look at the PayPal Fascists, can’t even explain what exactly I have done that is not in line with their User agreement. They steal our funds for 6 months? Screw Paypal and the establishment if you still want to support me you can do so without Paypal at www.supporttommy.com or using Bitcoin wallet 3MspPzwvsAwNHG2UsFMXzA6LVhHRqzajRc.”

In May 2018, Robinson was jailed for “breach of the peace” while reporting on the case of the Huddersfield grooming gang, a child sex abuse ring in the UK. In this case, Robinson was convicted for violating reporting restrictions that were put forth by the judge. Although initially sentenced to thirteen months in jail, he was later released on bail in August 2018 after it was found that his sentencing was unfair. He had then received $26,000 worth of bitcoin to cover his legal expenses by his follower and supporters.

Robinson is not the first right-wing controversial figure to be banned from PayPal. In the past year, PayPal has banned free-speech social media platform Gab and right-wing news site InfoWars from using their services. Gab was notably banned from Coinbase to. Wikileaks has been banned from PayPal since 2010.

WikiLeaks had moved to Bitcoin back then and at the time was one of the earliest adopters of the technology.
