A new company is entering the blockchain market in order to improve the service it provides to its clients. The global company Auchan, will be working on a distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform that would allow customers the possibility to track the goods that they purchase at the store. The information was recently released by Auchan in a press release.

The company started testing the system in Vietnam with good results from customers. Now, it will be implemented in France in some specific regions in the country. Users will be able to use a smartphone application and scan QR codes on certain products included in the DLT program.

In this way, it will be possible for users to have detailed information about where the food was sourced and how it was produced. At the moment, it would only possible to track only organic carrots. By December, users should also be able to track potatoes, and by February the intention is to track chicken.

The intention is to also reach other markets such as Spain, Italy or Senegal. In Italy, people would have the possibility to track tomatoes, and Spaniards would be able to search for information on their Iberian pork and local fruits.

The testing phase in Vietnam included the participation of the city of Ho Chi Minh. During this phase, the company says that 18,000 pigs, 200,000 chickens and 2,5 million eggs were tracked through the Auchan Retail Vietnam trials. There are also plans to add support for eggplants, mangoes and other goods.

Auchan works using a blockchain network that is known as FoodChain. FoodChain is built on Hyperledger Fabric and it has its own internal token known as CAL. Nevertheless, Auchan will only be using the blockchain technology rather than the token.

A FoodChain spokesperson commented about it:

“Companies like Auchan will not directly use [the token], as companies require invoices for payments.”

There are several companies that are starting to embrace blockchain technology and supermarkets are some of them. JD.com, an important e-commerce company in China has also taken the decision to implement a blockchain-based system to track the food it sells to its clients. Carrefour has also launched a blockchain system that aims at improving the knowledge that users have about specific goods.
