According to the official statement of Russian Wikipedia on Twitter, the personal data of Wikipedians, particularly users who created articles about the war, began to appear in anonymous Telegram channels. One author has already been arrested.

It seems personal data privacy and security of users is at stake. Could the decentralized web solve these problems?

Swarm brings censorship resistance, scalability, and reliability

The decentralized web can guarantee data privacy. Swarm is a content distribution service and storage platform using an Ethereum (ETH/USD) Web3 stack. It has a system of peer-to-peer networked nodes, allowing creators to store and retrieve any data.

At the same time, publishers can host their websites and other utilities. Redundancy makes the system resistant to node churn, connectivity issues, or targeted ddos attacks. It enables a zero-downtime service.

With censorship resistance, reliability, and scalability, Swarm is pioneering the way toward giving creators full control over their data.

Gregor Žavcer, Executive Director at the Ethereum Swarm project, told Invezz:

Nobody should be imprisoned for telling truth, even if truth hurts. Unfortunately, this is not the case today, even more information has become weaponized, and there’s clear need for solutions [such as Swarm] that enable digital freedom and freedom of press through privacy, data interoperability and censorship resistance.

In February 2021, Swarm ran a successful private sale, raising $6 million. They also held a blockbuster public sale in the middle of 2021 with a broad buyers’ base on CoinList. Daniel Nagy, Swarm lead developer said:

There’s high demand for privacy, and true data sovereignty across the community. Users will be quick to make the shift from centralized providers to decentralized, attracted with high reliability, anti-censorship protection, and lower operating costs.

Swarm has completed preparation and welcomes developers to access a decentralized hosting service and CDN.

About Swarm

Swarm is a fully decentralized and permissionless platform for data storage and retrieval built on Ethereum. It is a system of peer-to-peer networked nodes designed to store digital information in a decentralized way, and guarantee privacy and sovereignty to its users.

The self-sustaining infrastructure of Swarm emerges as the backbone of the next web, empowering digital freedom. By shifting the cost of access, hosting, and execution to users, it removes the last obstacle to truly agile and adaptive application development.

STARKs, Part I: Proofs with Polynomials

Special thanks to Eli Ben-Sasson for ongoing help, explanations and review, coming up with some of the examples used in this post, and most crucially of all inventing a lot of this stuff; thanks to Hsiao-wei Wang for reviewing Hopefully many people by now have heard of ZK-SNARKs, the general-purpose succinct zero knowledge proof technology that can be used for all sorts of usecases ranging from verifiable computation to privacy-preserving cryptocurrency.
