Etheremon Ditches ETH Network for Ziliqa Due to Scalability Issues

Etheremon, a game based on the Ethereum blockchain, has decided to move from its parent network temporarily and is now trying out the Ziliqa network. In a blog post, the Etheremon team announced that it had moved battles amongst players off the ETH blockchain because the exorbitant gas prices are restricting the gaming experience. Notably, the move to Ziliqa is only partial, as the game’s progress and assets will remain on the Ether network. Essentially, this development is a stop-gap until a permanent solution is realized.

Etheremon is a game in which players capture monsters which they use to fight against other users on the network. Since its inception in December 2017, the game has gained significant traction among crypto hobbyists. Within the first day, the game had over 17,000 transactions.

According to the game’s founder, Ngo Nam, the decision to move to Ziliqa is due to the radical increase in transaction costs on the Ethereum blockchain. As a result, the game is currently unfavorable for users. Precisely, Ngo stated that the gas prices on the ETH network had risen 100-fold in a relatively short period. This rapid rise has translated into an increase in the gaming price form a modest $0.3 to an expensive $35.

The Ethereum blockchain is the preferred network for most decentralized gaming platforms. The primary reason behind its popularity with game developers is the presence of tokens that are optimized for the decentralized game, including the recently launched ERC-1155 token standard by Energi Mine. Nonetheless, the Ether network has one glaring shortcoming- scalability. Despite the efforts of developers to improve throughput, the blockchain can only achieve a maximum of twenty transactions per second.

Even worse, the processing speed on the ETH blockchain has been dreadfully slow of late, and transaction costs have increased significantly. These challenges have been linked to a flawed voting protocol developed by FCoin, a Chinese crypto exchange. However, this is not the first time the ETH network is facing such a problem. At the end of 2017, the network was halted after the inauguration of the Crypto Kitties game.

Due to the scalability challenges facing Ethereum, the Etheremon team decided to sign a pact with Ziliqa. Albeit temporary as of now, the deal is open to a future lasting partnership between the two companies. Primarily, the Ziliqa network is designed to support scalability, with is development team alleging that it can process up to 2,000 transactions per second.

As mentioned earlier, the move to Ziliqa is currently partial. In this regard, Ngo said that the Ethereum network lacks the competent infrastructure to support complex games such as Etheremon, despite offering a conducive platform for such games. Regarding the change of the game’s title due to this shifting of platforms, Ngo stated that such a matter is trivial and is thereby not of under discussion, at least for now. Nevertheless, it is highly likely that the game will change its name from Etheremon to Zilimon should the partnership with Ziliqa prove to be fruitful.
