Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, had to grudgingly admit there were brains behind these persistent inescapable Ethereum scambots. The scam, which uses fake accounts to impersonate famous tech figures, has been running for months now, suggesting that even Twitter is unable to stop it at the moment.

Musk Tweets on Ethereum Scambots

Elon Musk must be a bit irked by now with all those bots using fake accounts to impersonate him on Twitter in an attempt to trick other users of the platform to send Ethereum tokens. However, Musk did not directly bash the scammers but rather hinted that he somehow admires them for their “mad skillz,” as reported by Independent.

On Monday, July 9, 2018, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO tweeted to his followers:

“I want to know who is running the Etherium scambots! Mad skillz.”

Twitter’s Inadequate Response

While it might appear from the tweet that Musk admired the coding skills of the scammers, it could also be his way of sarcastically putting attention to the long-running problem. Apparently, those Ethereum scambots have been around for a while now as the issue has already been covered by the New York Magazine as early as February this year.

And it’s not just Elon Musk’s name that is being used by these faceless scammers. In fact, even investment legend Warren Buffet, known for his cautious investment stance and for being against cryptos as an investment option, was not spared. Scammers created a fake Warren Buffet Twitter account and posted a message asking for a small amount of Ethereum with the promise of substantial returns.

Buffet’s fake Twitter account posted the message:

“As many of you know I’m into cryptos now. Giving out 100 Ethereum for the first 100 people. All you have to do is to deposit 5 ETH to address below and it will circulate back to you as 100 ETH!#befast #warrengives.”

The scambots are even testing the patience of Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin, who is also one of the famous personalities being used by the scammers. He is now asking for help from Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in dealing with the issue.

Buterin posted:

“I do wish @elonmusk’s first tweet about ethereum was about the tech rather than the twitter scambots……..@jack help us please? Or someone from the ETH community make a layer 2 scam filtering solution, please?”

Meanwhile, Twitter has been suspending more than a million fake accounts daily in recent months. However, it appears that the platform’s efforts are insufficient in curbing the ongoing scams.
