Douglas County Department of Commerce in Washington to Create a Blockchain Innovation Campus

2019-1-13 22:49

Central Washinton’s Douglas County officials are planning to build a blockchain innovation campus, according to a report published in the local daily The Seattle Times. The Douglas County Department of Commerce has announced $50,000 fund for the creation of the Blockchain campus.

Central Washington has been an epic-center for crypto mining firms because of the abundance of cheap hydroelectric energy available in the area. However, the 2018 market bloodbath has impacted the mining market significantly.

The announcement for building the Blockchain Innovation campus by the county is understandable as the rich mining activity in the past has left the county with high-quality computing and crypto expertise

One of the officials at Douglas county reportedly declared,

“We have some unique assets that make our region appealing to that industry. […] Let’s figure out a way to capitalize on it.”

The executive director of the Port of Douglas County, Lisa Park is a big crypto enthusiast herself. She and other officials at Douglas county are hoping that the blockchain can pave the way for a less volatile industry.

Not All-Central Washington Counties Are Crypto Mining Friendly

In November last year Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD), proposed a plan to create a separate structure of electricity bills for crypto mining usage, which would definitely cut the major chunk of mining profits.

Another report from April said that Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD) has enforced a cease on mining activities after cases of unauthorized mining activities increased.

However, Douglas County has been focused on building the crypto network in its area and did not increase any electricity or power charges for any new mining firms.

Douglas County Focused on Expanding Blockchain & Crypto Mining Industry

The Douglas County has made it a mission to support and build the crypto industry. The support for crypto mining has attracted big names such as Bitmain, the largest producers of ASIC mining rigs to make a $20 million investment. Bitmain will reportedly use 12 megawatts for its mining facility. This amount of electrical energy is sufficient to power around 5000 homes.

The Douglas County also has the GigaWatt Mining Facility under its due restrictions, since the firm filed for bankruptcy owing the county $310,000. Now the county is looking to use the facility for mining and other computer-centric technologies like Artificial
Intelligence.

Hopefully, the current measures and the proposed Blockchain Innovation Campus would help the county make a name among the crypto community and also bring back other major mining firms to the county.
