Blockchain projects thrive on decentralization, and the NEO Foundation is embracing that fact. The NEO Foundation announced on Oct. 22nd that KPN, a Dutch landline and mobile telecommunications giant based in Rotterdam was officially voted in as a consensus node in the NEO ecosystem on Oct. 20. The NEO Foundation previously hosted 6 of the 7 consensus nodes, and the latest development can be hailed as a major step towards decentralization, and possibly the future success of the NEO blockchain protocol.

Since the MainNet launch on Oct. 17, 2016, the NEO Foundation has been actively pursuing decentralization and wants to democratize the election which it currently has almost complete control of. For close to two years, the NEO Foundation hosted all the consensus nodes on the MainNet.

The CityofZion (CoZ), a global and independent group of developers, designers, and translators established to support the development of the NEO ecosystem, was voted by the NEO Foundation as a consensus node in July, and three months later, KPN has been voted as well.

The Dutch telecommunications giant has been acting as a consensus node on the NEO TestNet and has managed to maintain stable operations and as a result, earned admiration and acknowledgment from the community. This prompted the Foundation to hold the election three months ahead of time.

The NEO Foundation is planning to delegate consensus nodes to deserving partners so that the ecosystem can be further decentralized. The NEO consensus node page gives updates on the latest node status and applications for both “on-chain governance” and “off-chain governance.”

The NEO TestNet is more decentralized than the MainNet. On the TestNet, the NEO Foundation and the CityofZion host two nodes each while the NEO Global Development, the KPN, and Swisscom host one node each.

NEO’s TestNet was launched in November 2015. The MainNet was launched a year later with the NEO Foundation hosting all the seven nodes. 2017 was a “quiet” year as there were limited activities aimed at decentralized the ecosystem.

NEO’s voting algorithm was optimized in January 2018, setting the tone for the road to decentralization. The NEO Foundation voted Swisscom Blockchain as a consensus node in September. The election of consensus nodes is expected to be fully democratic in 2019.

The NEO token is currently trading at $16.49, representing a 0.03 percent jump in the last 24 hours. However, the election of KPN as a consensus node cannot be credited for the price jump. NEO is the fifteenth largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and has a market cap of $1 billion.

If the NEO Foundation continues on its path of decentralization, it will attract new partners and further the growth of the community. This is a step in the right direction, and hopefully, the foundation will build on what it has done so far.
