Cryptocurrency Inspires Women in Male-Dominated Market

2018-7-10 16:04

The world of cryptocurrency is inspiring a rising number of women who are becoming its advocates in a market that is known to have a male-dominated demographic. There’s a huge disparity between the number of men and women in the cryptocurrency community, but women might soon catch up as female crypto groups emerge.

While men still make up for most of the cryptocurrency demographic, female investors like Shanah Walton are hoping to change that notion. According to CNCB, Walton meets up with other women on a weekly basis in hopes to inspire them and kindle their interest in the cryptocurrency market.

Making a Difference

The self-proclaimed “Bitcoin Bombshell” hopes that other women won’t be intimidated by the complexity of cryptocurrency and the technology behind it.

She said:

“My primary goal is… to promote diversity in the space, and get women involved and let them know it’s not as hard or as nerdy or as techy as you would think it is.”

Walton added:

“There’s a lot of wealth being generated, and a lot of times we’re left out of the conversation. It’s left to the males, the husbands, the partners, significant others, etc. But it’s just as easy for us to get involved.”

Walton feels that having a lack of experience in the tech or finance industry doesn’t necessarily serve as a hindrance to becoming successful in the business. She explained:

“I’m in the hospitality industry. That’s my background for the past 12 years. So I have no financial experience, but I’ve been able to be very successful in the space.”

Walton explained that another advantage of the getting into the cryptocurrency market is its flexibility and believes that the nature of the business is a big advantage for moms. She expressed:

“It’s a global market. It’s 24 hours. So after the kids go to bed, you can get on your computer and do anything.”

Walton isn’t the only cryptocurrency advocate who sees the potential of women. Other attendees like Erika Mouynes are also feeling hopeful about their place in the industry. Mouynes said:

“The more and more women that are getting into this space, the more excited they get and they understand at first that it’s easy. It’s totally doable. There’s no magic thing that is going on that it’s in difficult or more challenging for women.”

The Bigger Picture

While the number of female investors in the cryptocurrency market rises, they are still heavily outnumbered by men. According to Fortune, 71% of Bitcoin investors are male in the U.S.

Aside from gender, about 58% of investors are young adults with ages ranging from 18 to 34. Furthermore, almost half of all the Bitcoin investors in the U.S. are minorities.

As for the reasons for getting into the cryptocurrency market, over 60% of the investors view it as a growth investment. About a third of the cryptocurrency community in the U.S. turned to Bitcoin in order to avoid regulations by the government while 24% of the demographic trust the cryptocurrency more than the U.S. government itself. 70% of investors believe in the notion that Bitcoin’s worth will increase further in five years.
