Nexo, a leading crypto lender, has received two prestigious certifications from RINA, a multinational inspection and certification company in Italy.

According to an announcement shared with Invezz, Nexo is now an ISO 27017 and ISO 27018 certified firm. The certifications build on the ISO 27001 standard granted to the company in 2019 for its Information Security Management Systems (ISMS), the company said.

The achievement demonstrates the crypto company’s security and privacy-focused approach, with ISO 27017 extending the security standards of ISO 27001 to its cloud service. In this case, Nexo collaborates with various cloud service providers to ensure it offers the highest levels of protection against potential cloud computing threats.

Meanwhile, ISO 27018 is a privacy-specific international standard, which attests to Nexo’s commitment to safeguarding its customers’ personally identifiable information (PII). Operational in the cloud, the feature allows for protection principles around explicit consent, data minimization and third-party management.

In a comment, Milan Velev, Chief Security Officer at Nexo, said the certifications are a “major step forward” for the crypto-backed loans provider as it looks to set security benchmarks in the digital finance space.

“We are not just complying with international standards; we are leading by example, prioritizing our clients’ security and privacy in every aspect of our operations,” Velev noted.

Security incidents, including hacks saw $1.7 billion stolen across the crypto landscape. The yearly total showed a 50% decrease from the losses seen in 2022. While notable in terms of what crypto platforms are doing to curtail further incidents, the overall take remains that the industry still has some way to go on this.

Nexo, which attained Type 2 SOC 2 audit in July 2023 to affirm its data security compliance, seeks to lead the push for further security and transparency. The crypto lender also has the CSA Security attestation and Trust & Assurance Registry (STAR) Level 1 Certification.
