Colorado is getting serious in its drive to weed out potential bad players in the crypto scene. The Division of Securities of Colorado’s Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), via its ICO Task Force, is currently investigating three firms for promoting unregistered initial coin offerings (ICOs).

Security Commissioner Issues Orders to Show Cause

Colorado Securities Commissioner Gerald Rome issued orders to show cause to three crypto firms as part of DORA’s ongoing investigations into the activities of these companies, according to a report by The Colorado Springs Business Journal. The firms under investigation are Bionic Coin, Global Pay Net (which is also known as GLPN Coin or GPN Token) and Sybrelabs Ltd. (also known as CryptoARB). The report added that the three crypto companies are under scrutiny in view of their promotions of unregistered ICOs.

The hearing to show cause took place on Aug. 24. However, later reports from various media outlets say that no representative from the three crypto firms showed up in the hearing. This could mean that the investigations could proceed to the next level, where the Commissioner will issue cease and desist orders.

Unregistered ICO Promotions

The Bionic Coin’s website contains information about an ICO for Bionic or BNC, which includes a whitepaper, frequently asked questions, and some blogs. As per DORA, the purpose of the token is “to enable instant payments to anyone, anywhere in the world, and to simplify the purchase of electronic devices and software.” The site, notes DORA, also claimed partnerships with Forbes magazine and other well-established media outlets, but DORA investigations say that there is no reference to the ICO on the sites of these media firms.

Meanwhile, Global Pay Net’s site is marketing an ICO for the GLPN token. The company says it plans to put up a blockchain-based international financial platform where investors can receive “80 percent of the company’s profits.” Furthermore, the company encourages people to share details of the ICO on social media and online forums by offering up to 5,000 GLPN coins as a reward. However, DORA noted that two of the crypto professionals listed by the company as being involved in the project already denied the company’s claim.

Sybrelabs Ltd., through the cryptoarb.org site, is likewise promoting an unregistered security to Colorado residents via an investment pool where users can trade in crypto exchanges with the use of a “cryptoarbitrage robot,” which can “automate many factors occurring with effective arbitrage on several instruments,” according to DORA.

Colorado’s Increasing Scrutiny for Potential Fraudulent Crypto Firms

With the increasing incidents of ICO and other crypto-related scams, Colorado has been increasingly vigilant on the activities of crypto companies. In May, it created the Colorado Division of Securities ICO Task Force to help protect its citizens from fraudulent companies looking to make quick money.
