The world of cryptocurrencies has been subject to both positive and negative developments since its inception. Coinhive, the infamous cryptocurrency mining script, is one of the latter. And while Coinhive was shut down earlier this year, that has not stopped other malicious activities from inflicting pain on the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

According to Malwarebytes, it blocked more than 200,000 requests to link to Coinhive, a day after it was officially shut down on March 8, 2019. Malwarebytes stated that they discovered a new mining software called ‘WebMinePool,’ that aims to target web routers which were previously affected by the Coinhive script. The official release from Malwarebytes said,

“Interestingly, we still detect thousands of blocks for Coinhive-related domain requests, even though the service announced it was shutting down on March 8. Over the past week, our telemetry recorded an average of 50,000 blocks per day.”

The website also claimed that the reason why these websites are still being affected is because a large number of these pages were never fully wiped clean off the remnants of previous Coinhive attacks. That meant that the pieces of JavaScript necessary to request data from the Coinhive library still existed, paving a path for future attacks.

Coinhive’s menace was recently addressed by Mozilla Firefox too after the popular browser released a statement titled ‘Protecting Against Fingerprinting and Cryptocurrency Mining Available in Firefox Nightly and Beta.’ The report from Mozilla read,

“At Mozilla, we have been working hard to protect you from threats and annoyances on the web, so you can live your online life with less to worry about. Last year, we told you about adapting our approach to anti-tracking given the added importance of keeping people’s information on the web private in today’s climate.”
