The 50 companies were selected in partnership with accounting firm Plante Moran, based on the following eligibility criteria:

Crain’s considered only firms that have been in business since at least Dec. 31, 2015
Crain’s excluded real estate investment trusts, regulated banks, real estate developers, utilities, holding companies, subsidiaries/divisions, franchises and nonprofit organizations. Small companies (those reporting less than $15 million in 2020 revenue) were likewise not considered
Companies had no more than one drop in revenue from 2015 to 2020
