Cloudflare Launches IPFS Platform as First Announcement of “Crypto Week”

Internet security giant Cloudflare is introducing a new product catered to crypto markets. Cloudflare’s new decentralized web gateway will make it easier for users to access the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) decentralized storage protocol.

Cloudflare announced the news Monday as part of its “Crypto Week”. During Crypto Week, Cloudflare will announce “support for a new technology that uses cryptography to make the internet better” on a daily basis. The first of Cloudflare’s technologies has been revealed as the IPFS tool.

Cloudflare will announce a new crypto-related technology every day this week as part of its new “Crypto Week”.

Cloudflare’s IPFS will help users more easily access the storage network. It will also help users build websites on top of IPFS.

IPFS is a decentralized storage protocol developed by Protocol Labs. Files are encrypted and stored on a decentralized network of servers worldwide. There’s no centralized server farm to attack, and storage costs are minimized compared to traditional providers. Now, Cloudflare is making it easier than ever for users to access the protocol.

The IPFS announcement was just the first post from Cloudflare. Cloudflare explained their technology in a post titled, “Cloudflare goes InterPlanetary – Introducing Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway.”

In the second post, the company explained that the peer-to-peer nature of IPFS provides a number of redundancies for users trying to access a specific website or piece of data.

The first redundancy is that content is accessible even if a node goes down. With a traditional centralized storage system, a single server failure might bring down a website and remove it from the internet.

The second redundancy is that IPFS revolves around the idea of using requesting data using hash values instead of IP addresses, which acts as a method of ensuring the data received is what was requested, according to the post.

Because of these features, Cloudflare sees enormous potential in IPFS as the future of internet storage. The blog post goes into deep technical detail about the merits of IPFS technology and how it works, including features that could make IPFS the preferred internet storage protocol of the future.

How Does Cloudflare’s IPFS Technology Work?

Cloudflare is making it significantly easier to access the InterPlanetary File Storage (IPFS) protocol.

Cloudflare is building a gateway that delivers content using Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS), the dominant protocol used to transfer data securely online today.

Here’s how Cloudflare explained its technology in the blog post:

“At the most basic level, you can access any of the billions of files stored on IPFS from your browser. But that's not the only cool thing you can do. Using Cloudflare's gateway, you can also build a website that's hosted entirely on IPFS, but still available to your users at a custom domain name. Plus, we'll issue any website connected to our gateway a free SSL certificate, ensuring that each website connected to Cloudflare's gateway is secure from snooping and manipulation.”

Decentralization advocates will notice there’s a caveat in Cloudflare’s announcement:

Cloudflare reserves the right to remove abusive or harmful content. Users can report abusive or harmful content to Cloudflare, which suggests that Cloudflare has the power to revoke its portal to websites that provide such content. It’s an element of centralization in an otherwise-decentralized protocol.

Despite this small reservation, Cloudflare’s IPFS technology immediately makes the protocol more accessible. It’s a huge leap forward for the IPFS project and Protocol Labs.

Cloudflare is Announcing New Crypto-Related Technologies Every Day This Week

This entire upcoming week (September 17 to September 21) is Crypto Week at Cloudflare. Every day this week, Cloudflare is announcing support for a new technology that uses cryptography to make the world a better place.

The company is announcing the news via its blog. They’re motivated to support crypto because:

“it’s good for the users and good for the internet.”

It’s possible that Cloudflare will be announcing more integrations with exciting crypto and blockchain projects later this week. We’ll keep you posted as one of the internet’s largest security providers seeks to improve the world of crypto.
