Charles Hoskinson is one of the most well-known personalities in the crypto industry. Aside from being the co-founder of both Cardano and Ethereum, and the CEO of IOHK, Hoskinson is known for his bold stance on digital currencies. On Sunday, July 8, he surprised Reddit users with an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session wherein he talked about a meeting with Google he attended in London last month.

During the session, Hoskinson talked about his “informal Q&A session” in Google. He said Google told him:

“Hey, We’d like to ask you lots of questions about the cryptocurrency space, about the technology that Cardano has, and what IOHK does as a company.”

Hoskinson and his team from IOHK attended the two-hour long meeting where they answered questions by the attendees. IOHK even shared a transcript of the meeting on their blog, leading to speculations, that the two companies could enter a partnership soon.

Hoskinson said that Google doesn’t need him or any other crypto company to develop a blockchain or digital currency of their own. He noted that:

“Some phenomenal scientists working at Google, from world-famous cryptographers to infosec people … If Google is going to do a cryptocurrency, Google does not need to partner with me, and they don’t need to partner with Bitcoin, Ethereum, or anything else. They are just going to go ahead and do their own thing.”

He went on to praise the work the company has done in creating open-source technology but denied that a partnership with the company is in the books.

“Google is a good patron of open-source technology, and many of their employees do invest their weekends and at least one day a week on contributing to some open-source project. And Google does a very large internal cryptocurrency and blockchain mailing list. A lot of their employees love this space. In fact, Mike Hearn, one of the most famous Googlers, was originally a core developer of Bitcoin.”

Hoskinson noted that IOHK would welcome any of the Google employees if they want to make any contributions to their platform. He added that the meeting gave IOHK an opportunity to tell people at Google what they are working on.

Before Hoskinson, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a tweet claiming that he has been approached by a Google recruiter to work with them, possibly for Google’s own distributed ledger platform. The tweet was later deleted.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin expressed his opinion on digital currencies at the 2018 Blockchain Summit held last weekend in Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island. He said that cryptography used for these digital currencies is “kind of extraordinary, it’s mindboggling.”

Brin also talked about privacy currency Zcash and suggested that developers are using concepts straight out of theoretical computer science and finding real-world applications for the same. He also revealed that he is mining Ethereum with his son.
