Cardano Leads Pack With Most Developer Activity in 2021

GitHub reveals some interesting statistics regarding developer involvement in active blockchain projects for 2021.

A report detailing developer activity for different tokens was released by Santiment, which can be an essential indicator of how successful a project will be in the long term. A platform called GitHub provides statistics on developer activity. GitHub is a software repository site of choice for projects like Solana, Polkadot, Ethereum, and IOTA. It is a centrally located versioning control system where code for projects is visible to the public and where developers can propose and submit improvements and additions to an existing project.

The top 20 projects by aggregated development activity for 2021 include Cardano, Kusama, Polkadot, and Ethereum. The NFT-focused Flow project comes in at number nine. Kusama is a development sandbox comprised of a scalable network of unique blockchains whose code is based mainly on Polkadot. It is used to test applications before deploying them on Polkadot. The number of active contributors to any project’s GitHub repo gives insight into the reach of that project’s developer network.

Cardano wins this metric for 2021, with 53 daily contributors. Other notable projects with significant numbers of daily active developers include the Trust Wallet token, with 28 developers, and Filecoin, with 22 developers.

Developer interest in the Solana token is especially evidenced by the attendance at Solana’s Hackathon events. The number of registrations for the inaugural hackathon in Oct 2020 was 1000. It then increased to 3000 for the Solana X Serum DeFi Hackathon in Feb. 2021 and 13000 for the Solana Season Hackathon in May 2021.

GitHub commits have increased

In GitHub, a commit is a way of adding a change to a project. Cryptomiso reports the number of commits made to a project on GitHub. In the last 12 months, there have been 8193 commits to the Trust Wallet Token project and 4552 commits to the Solana token. Cardano’s most active contributor between Sep 2016 and Jan. 2022 is gromakovsky, with 2200 commits, followed by volhovm with 837 commits.

DeFi protocol development activity

Concerning DeFi protocols, it appears that sidechains, bridges, and layer two solutions have driven development. The top 20 projects leading the way in development activity include defichain, PancakeSwap, and Uniswap. Ethereum remains the leading platform for DeFi apps, and the top 10 DeFi coins by market cap in 2021 were based on Ethereum.
