Cardano CEO Announces Chrome Extension Wallet Called ‘Icarus’

2018-8-15 00:27

The founder and CEO of Cardano, Charles Hokinson, has announced that Cardano has created a new internet-browser-extension wallet called Icarus. The third-party project is announced in partnership with Cardano’s Japanese supporting sub-division company, Emurgo, and aims to provide a smoother and more secure user experience for ADA token holders.

The announcement came earlier than expected. Originally scheduled for August 15th, Cardano CEO Charles Hokinson took to Twitter early this morning to unveil the new Icarus project.

What is Icarus?

Icarus is a Google Chrome extension (also compatible with Mozilla Firefox and mobile applications) which serves as a full wallet running within a browser, providing users direct access to their stored funds. Icarus is similar to Ethereum‘s Metamask and is intended to be an upgrade from Cardano’s traditional use-case wallet, Daedalus. Icarus features all the same functionality as Daedalus, and users can now fully import their Daedalus wallet onto Icarus. The new wallet boasts faster speeds than its predecessors, reportedly only taking between 2-3 minutes for wallet recovery. Icarus functions similarly to a light wallet, as it does not require a download of the full blockchain to be used.

“We created this because we wanted to have a reference design for people who wanted to do mobile wallets and browser based wallets, because we were a little worried about security,” said Hokinson.

Hoskinson reported that a number of third party wallet developers had come to Cardano with proposed third-party wallets, but Cardano’s team found many of these projects to be flawed in their design. Hokinson added, “Icarus is the light wallet experience we would like our partners to use.”

Emurgo is said to be building off of Icarus’ design to launch its own wallet within the coming months.

The Icarus wallet will also include open-source wallet code functionality and compatibility with popular hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor. Icarus’ code-base will be running in parallel with Cardano, and Hokinson believes that the new project will generate a great deal of support among users.

“We expect a lot of people to get really excited and start using this to build their experiences over the next six months to a year,” said Hokinson.

Cardano Project Opening Up for Third Party Contributions

Hokinson has also announced that Cardano is beginning to hire out for an open-source software director, and plans to begin opening up the Cardano project for third-party contributions to tackle issues on the platform. The Cardano Foundation is currently awaiting a proposal for an official submission for a formalized Cardano improvement proposal process. The proposal will allow for CIP submissions and encourage a more democratized, community-driven process for directing Cardano’s future developments.

“We really look forward to browser developers to come and take a look at what we’ve done,” said Hokinson.

Other development companies like Saturn are said to be already looking into providing additional support. “It’s all open source, its all under an MIT license, and come mid-August you will be able to play with it, fork the code, make suggestions on where to go, and we’re really curious to hear about your product ideas.”

Hokinson expressed hope that today’s announcement would provide encouragement for the future of Cardano, and urged users to not stress over the current bear market.
