Can the US Maintain its Lead in AI Development?

2020-1-23 07:00

Artificial intelligence is perhaps one of the most groundbreaking technologies in recent decades. However, there are still plenty of concerns as to how this industry will evolve.

In fact, various MIT professors confirm that the US is potentially falling behind the rest of the world.

Maintaining the Lead in AI Development

It is evident that various countries are “racing” for dominance in the AI space.

China is considered to be one of the main competitors to the US in this regard.

MIT professors are now pointing out how the US risks falling behind.

In their opinion, AI development is linked tightly with immigration and government investments.

Because of recent geopolitical tensions, there are now numerous roadblocks in place preventing AI researchers to come to the US.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t enough smart Americans to help advance this space.

However, they may not be able to keep pace with Chinese research ventures.

For now, the US remains the leader as far as AI development and commercialization is concerned.

With other countries receiving more governmental support, the gap is tightening fairly quickly.

Maintaining the lead over China and others will be crucial, but that is much easier said than done.

Attracting the brightest minds will be a crucial aspect.

Governance, Part 2: Plutocracy Is Still Bad

Coin holder voting, both for governance of technical features, and for more extensive use cases like deciding who runs validator nodes and who receives money from development bounty funds, is unfortunately continuing to be popular, and so it seems worthwhile for me to write another post explaining why I (and Vlad Zamfir and others) do not consider it wise for Ethereum (or really, any base-layer blockchain) to start adopting these kinds of mechanisms in a tightly coupled form in any significant way.
